Managing Editor
Phenomenal World (PW) is seeking a managing editor. This is a full-time position, and compensation is $85,000 plus benefits. We have a strong preference for candidates based in New York City. The new managing editor will start around September 2025.
PW is an online magazine of political economy that publishes research and writing in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. We strive to cohere and advance deeply informed political and economic debate—to equip ourselves and readers with an understanding of the crises that define the present and the struggles that will shape our future. PW regularly hosts online events and occasional in-person convenings, and has a book series with the University of Chicago Press. We are housed within the Jain Family Institute, a nonprofit research organization in New York City, and our editorial team is based across the US, the UK, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.
You will be a good fit for this role if you have a strong editorial background and have been responsible for managing the workflow of a magazine, journal, or newsroom. Sharp writing ability, good people skills, and an interest in history, politics, labor, finance, economics, and the like are essential.
Responsibilities
- Manage the full scope of PW’s editorial workflow, from commissioning to weekly publication
- Run weekly editorial meetings with the English, Spanish, and Portuguese editorial teams, assign incoming pieces to editors, and keep the editorial team and authors to deadline
- Manage payments to authors and translators
- Supervise the interns from our CUNY fact-checking and research internship program
- Participate in all aspects of PW editorial work—commissioning and editing articles, conceiving of series and events, and so on
Relevant experience
- Professional experience in magazine, journal, book, or news publishing
- Extremely strong organizational skills, and experience working collaboratively in groups and/or managing roles
- Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
- Ability to manage a complex, multi-lingual editorial workflow using tools like Google Drive and Airtable
- Familiarity working with a CMS, and tools like Mailchimp, social media, and so on
- Familiarity or fluency with Spanish, Portuguese, or another language other than English is strongly preferred
